Tips for Creating a Proper at Home Work Environment

When we’re talking about your WFH environment we’re referring to two things: both the physical space and your mindset. For many of us, this is a new normal and one we may be living with for a little while longer so, we need to make the most of it.

We get it, this may be easier said than done, especially for those of us living in a New York City apartment; often times with our partners mere feet away. However, this is no excuse to be taking business video calls from an unmade bed in a messy room. It’s not the most professional portrayal of yourself and it doesn’t lend itself well to doing your best work.

With a few practical steps and purchases (ok, maybe the purchases are more for fun than practicality) we can create a WFH setup that rivals our offices.

MAINTAIN A ROUTINE
If you typically wake up at 7:00am, get up at 7:00. If you are a morning showerer, there’s no reason not to be now. Make the bed. Make a cup of coffee. Get a workout in. It’s imperative to keep as great a sense of normalcy as possible, it can effect your state of mind for the rest of the day.

Getting a run in early might mean fewer people on your path.
Echo Buds, $129.99

Support local even if you’re brewing at home.
Irving Farm, 71 House Medium Roast, $15

LOCATE A PLACE OF PRODUCTIVITY
Minimal distractions, good lighting, and comfortable seating are all key elements in your professional setup. Also, do your best to keep the area free of clutter, especially things you don’t want peeped by your boss on a video call.

Your kitchen bar stools just won’t cut it.
AmazonBasics Modern Adjustable Low Back Armless Desk Chair, $75.99

MAKE THE SPACE YOUR OWN
Bring in small elements of decor. Greenery (fake or real, we won’t judge), lamps, and tchotchkes gives the area some personality and will help create a place you won’t mind sitting at for the day.

No sunlight or watering needed.
Artificial Succulents Set of 3, $11.99

A “bright” idea.
Iron Lantern Glass Shade Desk Lamp, $34

Channel the spirit of a local legend while you work.
Celebs on Sandwiches: Jerry Seinfeld Print, $30

GIVE YOURSELF THE PROPER TOOLS
Here’s where we may go just a tad overboard with the purchasing but hey, it’s not like we’re spending money on too much else right now (except, if you have the means, please consider making a donation to the COVID-19 Response Fund!).

Blue light filtering glasses during the work day means worrying less when we watch Netflix in bed, right?
Felix Gray Turing, $95

This is the only mouse we want to ever find in our apartment.
Apple Magic Mouse 2, $79

Get it write, get it tight.
Liquid Gel Pen Set of 5, $9

The purpose here is twofold. We’re all having a hard time remembering what day it as and we could use a laugh.
Cartoons from The New Yorker Desk Calendar, $3.99

KEEP UP WITH A WEEKDAY WARDROBE
New York is one of the fashion capitals of the world and we get dressed with a certain sense of purpose and self each morning. Don’t let that change. It may only mean changing from pajamas to loungewear but getting out of that tattered fraternity rush t-shirt you’ve been wearing to bed most nights for the past eight years is a big step in starting your day.

Relaxed but socially responsible.
Harry Styles “Stay Home Stay Safe” Tee, $26

Yes, put on pants even if your boss can only see you from the waist up.
J.Crew Men’s Duo-Knit Lounge Pant, $69.50

You’ll need to know when it’s time to make yourself a cocktail.
Swatch, $80

As if we’d be putting on a pair of jeans right now.
H&M Women’s Fine-Knit Joggers, $29.99

Stay home. Bring the beach to you.
Free People Delicate Anklet Set, $28

BE ABLE TO WALK AWAY
Creating a boundary for yourself is a must. Don’t feel guilty for stepping away from the computer mid-morning to make a second cup of coffee or for taking the dog for a walk during your lunch hour. If you could take the time to recap the latest episode of Game of Thrones, this qualifies as an acceptable break.

So, no one told us life was gonna be this way.

“Central Perk” Mug, $19.95

WRAP UP THE DAY AS YOU USUALLY WOULD
Just because the office is now in the home doesn’t mean work time doesn’t end. Be sure to get everything done but also be sure to know when to finish for the day. Without the evening commute you should be left with some time to try a new recipe for dinner and sip a nightcap while binging season three of Ozark.

Simply pour over nice, no stirring or shaking required.
Jameson Cold Brew, $29

And since you’ve been humming this tune since reading the headline…
