  • In 1901 the Society of Illustrators was founded “… to promote generally the art of illustration and to hold exhibitions from time to time.” Since 1939 the Society has been housed in this graceful, five-story townhouse, where the lower levels eventually became the museum it is today. In addition to special exhibits ranging from alternative comics to children’s book illustration, there’s a permanent collection boasting nearly 2,000 works by the greatest names in the field. Fledgling illustrators are welcome to hone their skills at twice-weekly “sketch nights.”
