Sean Combs: Interview


As a producer, performer, fashion designer, fragrance provocateur, vodka visionary, actor, and television host, Sean “Diddy” Combs has established himself as a global mega brand whose endeavors have redefined numerous industries. In 1998, the Grammy-winning artist and CEO/founder of Combs Enterprises took the fashion industry by storm with the launch of SeanJohn, a young men’s apparel brand that immediately became the most sought out brand in the young men’s market. Winner of numerous awards, including the prestigious CFDA Men’s Designer of the Year Award, Sean Combs is an unstoppable force in fashion and media. NYC Monthly was honored to speak with him recently about SeanJohn, its support of the NBA All-Star Game, and more… 

What are your thoughts about the NBA All-Star Game back in New York for 2015?

New York is not only the best city in the world but it is MY hometown – born in Harlem…  It’s the city that made my dreams a reality.. So to have the game here is amazing and I look forward to welcoming everyone!!!

We understand SeanJohn is sponsoring the NBA All-Star Practice that takes place on Saturday, February 14th. What can you tell us about that?

SeanJohn and the NBA have had a long relationship for several years now and this is another extension of that partnership.  It is a way to engage the NBA fan during this exciting weekend and further brand ourselves to this consumer.

Beyond the excitement of the practice, what are some of the other highlights during the week that you’re looking forward to?

In addition to the All Star Practice, SeanJohn will be hosting a personal appearance by John Wall at Macy’s Herald Square on February 12th from 6 – 8 pm and another personal appearance/performance by Troy Ave at Macy’s Downtown Brooklyn on February 14th from 4 – 6 pm.

In 2010 you forged an exclusive partnership with Macy’s. Tell us more about this collaboration.

In May 2010, we signed the deal with the biggest department store in the world…and it has been an incredible partnership ever since.  It was a great platform for the SeanJohn brand and all 17 categories I design.  To date, we are in over 400 stores nationwide and business has been exceeding expectations year after year.

We understand you launched a tequila named DeLeon in the last few years. How’s that going so far? Is there any tie in with the NBA All-Star Game?

DeLeon Tequila is the latest addition to the Combs Enterprises family, having been formally launched by us last October after acquisition earlier in the year.  Initial indications are we have another hit in the spirits industry as consumer excitement and trade demand are both high.  DeLeon will be a supporting player at the NBA All-Star games as we host intimate parties around NYC.

Cîroc Vodka is one of the most popular vodkas on the market. What’s the latest with Cîroc?

Cîroc is ready for 2015 and is kicking off the year as the Official Toast of the NBA taking back our home court in NYC for All Star Weekend and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  For the first time, Cîroc will be the Official Vodka of the Grammy’s – toasting the top musical artists.  In addition, Cîroc is getting ready to announce a new addition to the brand portfolio…More to come!!!  So we invite you to “Step into the Circle” and join the Cîroc Life for the year ahead.

Overall, what’s in store for the SeanJohn family of brands in 2015? What does the future look like? What’s exciting?

2015 is turning out to be a big year for the brand.  In addition to All Star Weekend, SeanJohn will be the official co-sponsor to the 57th Annual Grammy gifting lounge, and the NBA and NFL gifting suites…  We will also be launching a brand new fragrance later in the year that is sure to be a HIT!!  Keep an eye out for watches, girls, and a re-launch of our denim program right in time for back to school.

Stop by our Macy’s Herald Square shop in July after we move to the 3rd floor and shop our brand new flagship location.

And we are also very excited to announce SeanJohn is expanding internationally…   CAN’T STOP, WON’T STOP.
