The Big Apple is full of frozen fun.
It may be the middle of winter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a great time. Fend off those pesky winter blues by embracing the cold by exploring the Big Apple’s vast array of ice-themed activities. From sporting events to unique bars, January proves to be the coolest month yet (and in the best way possible). But you don’t have to just take our word for it…
Nothing kicks off the New Year better than a fun-filled glide around an ice skating rink. And luckily for you, NYC has a ton to choose from! Bryant Park offers up the perfect locale for a little rink-side frivolity, while also putting you smack dab in the heart of its Bank of America Winter Village. This way, you can shop and skate until your heart’s content. (41 W. 40th St) But for those looking to get away from all the city noise, the Wollman Rink in Central Park provides the perfect oasis, allowing visitors a tranquil night out while still getting to take in that gorgeous Manhattan skyline. (59th St. and 6th Ave.) Then, of course, there’s always the signature rink at Rockefeller Center. Sure, you may have to stand in line for a bit before hitting the ice, but we promise it’s well worth the wait – not to mention a fantastic photo opportunity. After all, it’s not every day you get to have 30 Rock for a backdrop. (5th Ave. b/w 49th and 50th St.)
Speaking of rinks, hockey fans won’t want to miss the chance to see our very own New York Rangers take the ice this month against some of the biggest powerhouse teams in the country. Watch as they take on the Sabres (1/3), the Islanders (1/13), the Senators (1/20), the Canadiens (1/29), and the Hurricanes (1/31) for an epic showdown live at the city’s biggest (and best) arena, Madison Square Garden. After one visit here, you’ll never want to settle for your usual living room seating ever again. (4 Pennsylvania Plaza)
But don’t let skates be the only thing you experience on ice. New York City’s Minus5 Ice Bar — which is just as cool both literally and figuratively as it sounds — transports its guests into their very own winter wonderland. Located in the lobby of the New York Hilton Midtown, this bar is covered in ice from head to toe. The walls, the seats, the bar — you name it, it’s got ice on it. And if you’re worried about being too cold, don’t be. They provide you with gloves and warm parkas to keep you feeling cozy during your entire visit. This leaves you free to focus on what’s really important, like making sure you’ve tried every frozen cocktail on the menu. And yes, they just so happen to be served in glasses made entirely of ice. It’s the perfect place to come chill with friends, no matter the occasion. (1335 Avenue of the Americas)
